Designing With Web - Part 3: week 1

Reinventing museum visit experience for teachers using sound design

Group 59

Project 1: The perfect guide

Context

when? where? who? why?

Our project is mainly aimed at enhancing the museum visit experience for teachers by providing a better teaching and learning environment for teachers and students. We target museums all over the world, of all kind. As we all know, a museum by itself is very encompassing, teachers find it difficult to maintain a healthy and an enthusiastic environment throughtout the visit. During the visit, the students often lose their concentration and end up losing their interest for the visit. To make it more enhacing for the teacher and to keep the students engaged throughout their time in the museums, we offer a special personalised track to students based on sound design, allowing them to carry out their own way of exploring the museum, being supervised by the teacher.

The teacher will also have information about each student and their location in the museum, also able to talk to them and guide them about the various artifacts. Our product mainly focuses on making the musuem visit experience less monotonous for the children and also enable the teacher to better deliver lessons through the visit. Nevertheless, since we need to make students equally interested in other areas as well, our museum tour is designed in such a way that by the end of the visit, each student has accessed all the parts of the museum

Target

for whom?

Our goal is to help teachers better utilise the museum visit to impart knowledge transfer to children through interactive methods. Traditional ways are often boring for both students and teachers, subsequently losing interest and hence hindering the main objectives of a museum visit. We intend to provide a solution for both teachers and students. Our product is available to teachers and students with teachers having some additional access to information about every student. Our product is completely technology driven and hence does not require any special hardware for access, thus making it simpler for implementation. Another target group could be the museum administration and its visitors,so that museum visits can be more interesting and the administration can keep track of the visits and make some improvements.

Service offered

what? how?

The Perfect Guide is an Android and iOS application that enhances museum visits.Teachers and students can download the appication and enter the name of the museum they are visiting and the teacher additionally enters the details of his/her name and the number of students. The teacher will be able to play different sounds played based on the artifacts in the museum. For example, there might be sounds of war denoting the war ruins in the museum, sounds of ancient civilisation, sounds of dinosaurs, voices of painters, etc. All of these sounds stem from sound design artists. As we can not really reproduce a dinosaur voice or a bombing scene, sound design will help us to create thousands of different voices and sounces for the app. Each student has to choose their favourite theme based on the audio played. The teacher will then get the results of the choices of the students. The students are made into groups based on their selection, forming their respective groups. The teacher then directs the individual groups in their respective paths based on the option they chose. Throughout the tour, students will be guided by innovative sound designs associated with the artifacts through their headphones. The teacher will be able to locate the groups through GPS and also provide them narratives. The students can also interact with the teacher at any point during the tour through the app thanks to a chatting service. He/she can ask questions to the teacher or report any emergency. Finally, the tour also makes every student visit every place in the museum, making it a wholesome experience for the students. At the end of the visit, the teacher will have access to a plethora of information such as the path followed by each group, time spent by the groups at each point, their ratings of each artifact, questions asked by the students, etc.

The application for the teacher will initially have the results page of the survey, with the graphs of the responses by the students. The application then groups the students automatically with their usernames. Each group page will have information about the group members like location, audio being played and time spent by the each member. There will also be a pause option available to both teacher and the student allowing to provide narratives and ask questions respectively.

Project 2: Immersive museums

Context

when? where? who? why?

Most of the time, visiting a museum with a guide or a teacher is boring even if the explanation is relevant and interesting.
Our ambition is to find a solution to make these visits less boring for the visitors, but also for the teachers who always tells the same speech. Because of course repetition is boring for guides. And when guides are bored, their explanations are bound to be boring for the visitors.

To overcome this issue, our idea is to make visits more immersive in order to provide a pleasant experience for the visitors as well as the teacher. This is why we want to change the role of the guide, it would not be just a teacher but a real actor and story teller at the same time. His role would be to build the immersive experience by himself thanks to our service. Actually we believe that making visits immersive is the key to attract attention of the visitors, above all when they are young. Our solution could be used in classical art museums, in order to improve the level of information ingested by the visistors, as well as entertainment museums, in order to built a total immersive experience.

Target

for whom?

When it comes to museums, our major trump card is that we are able to target all of them (in big touristic cities) but with different types of visits because each visit has to be related to the museum’s pieces of art in order to be immersive.
Regarding teachers, it would be even better for them and for the students if they have eloquence or acting skills.
Concerning visitors, our service has to be for everybody : family, students, adults and old people, but aimed mainly at enhancing teachers' experience.

Consequently we need to provide different types of visits for each of the three segment of the market (the atmosphere of the visit is adapted to each audience). This is why we provide at least three kinds of visits (with different atmospheres) in each museum.

Service offered

what? how?

Our service is an application available on both Android and iOS operating systems and is based on two ideas :

• An immersive concept:
Thanks to earpods connected to each phnoe, the teacher can trigger 8D sounds or music. He or she can use these sound effects in order to illustrate his words or even to create a real scenario while visiting the museum and presenting pieces of art. As an example the teacher could trigger a thunder noise « behind the visitors » (thanks to 8D audio) to make them turn and look at an other piece of art like a snowstorm painting. The teacher will have at his disposal several sounds and music that he/she can subjoin as he/she likes

• Diversity of experiences:
We believe that one type of atmosphere cannot satisfy everybody. This is why we have chosen to provide at least three types of atmosphere: energic and funny, calm and smooth or the atmosphere of an other era/world. Then, we add to them lots of sound design that they can use. Our real goal is to make you feel like if you were taking part of a story or that you are a character of an other era.
